Stupid, stupid car. After having sat for awhile, the coolant formed some gunk in the radiator. I had no idea, as it looked good when I started dailying it, but over the past couple thousand of miles that sediment kept getting circulated through the car. There was no indication of a problem as I hadn’t checked the coolant or oil in a few weeks, and on my way home today, the temp gauge shot up to red, so I killed the engine and coasted to the side of the road, steaming like a teakettle. It had spit a bunch of coolant out through a hole in the radiator that was a result of whatever blockage the system had. It’s now sitting in the high school auto shop, and I’m back to square one with this damn thing. Hope your fridays are going better than mine, Oppo!
Below: This is the radiator cap. This scares me.
Below: Overflow resivoir with the stuff in it. Has the consistency of a very heavy weight oil, full of grit.
At least it’s not as unreliable as the tow truck that hauled it back to the school, 170k, second motor&trans.

ooof, rad sludge is gnarly stuff. I’m STILL flushing out gunk from the previous owners mixing of coolants. This is like 40,000 miles after I replaced the entire cooling system.
If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

Good ole Dex-Cool. Check all your gaskets or it may happen again.

“I replaced the entire cooling system”.
I think that sounds even scarier than the prospect of being in college this time next year... Or maybe it’s just my wallet that’s terrified...

Ballpark $? I know a new radiator’s somewhere around $100, but I really, really do not want to dump another $500 into this damn thing at this point.

Youre going to have to pull the heads if you want to be sure. Ive seen a Jeep Liberty do that, and the diagnosis was terminal.

Think I’m gonna try to flush the system multiple times, with a few different remedies to dissolve that crap. Apparently, there’s a deserving nickname for this Dex-Cool crap, “Death-Cool”. Could be fitting in my situation :( How much can a junkyard 5.7 really cost though, I mean, no way the whole shebang is more than a grand, worst case scenario. Either way, it is getting SOLD as soon as it gets back on the road.

Amazon radiator, hoses and coolant. Not your problem after that.
